Your king is out to fight a war to protect your kingdom. However, during his absence, a spy has infiltrated the kingdom. The Spy hides in the shadows and spreads his poison.

It is up to you, the Royal Alchemist, to capture the spy, and cure the poison. But beware, the spy moves in the shadows and becomes basically invisible.

other than needing some polishing looks good
also i got jumpscared bruh :(
also music and sounds
i found what i think is a bug: the spy can just spawn on top of you and you can insta arrest him, making it an easy win

It was fun and had that spooky factor when you can't see where the spy is all the time. You had to try and keep track of where the spy had last been at all times.

This game has a lot of potential, especially if given more ingredients for the antidote and needing specific ones. Or needing to deliver antidotes to houses. There is sooooo much potential and I hope it's given more love!

Here are some improvements I think should be made in its current state:

Start off in a random location. I always start on 2, 2.

Turn down or change that dang game over sound. It scares the crap out of me every time lol

Better last location detection. It doesn't detect last location very well. It told me he was on 1,4 for at least 3 turns when I clearly saw him on 1,1.

It can be a bit difficult to find him without being killed while he's invisible. Maybe give us a few extra ways to track his movements? If there is already a movement pattern maybe we could have a way to keep track of it? Some of us have a horrible memory.

All-in-all, great job!

nerd XD

The System is now updated so that the Spy's "Last movement direction" will be updated after every move you make.

Definitely cooking (or should I say 'brewing') with this one.

Has those oldschool vibes and it worked to where I saw all the victory and lose screens. Take the feedback you get into account and consider it a job well done on one of your early outings.

This game definitely gives old-school vibes. Was a cool first prototype to check out by TheGamingContrarian! Nicely done!

Some Thoughts:

I think it would help to have a bit less text on startup before getting into the game (more concise language).

Once the game was completed I noticed it did not restart on its own and was left at the end screen until I refreshed the page. This may be a bug and not an intended feature.

Was fun to search around for the clues to brew the potion. I could see this getting even more complex.

I enjoyed the sound effects as well and can't wait to see more!

Pretty straight forward. A few things surprised me:

  • Starting location was the same based on my last movement (I spawned at the spot I died)  for the three attempts it took me to save the kingdom. Works if I'm undead, but not sure if that's intentional for a lowly Royal Alchemist.
  • I started in the same square as the spy, and immediately arrested him. The arrest screen appeared, but then when I attempted to move, I was defeated by that darn spy! Not sure if that's working as intended.
  • Potion was as straight forward as you would imagine - seems like a percentage chance you will find both an ingredient and its correct position in order as you explore locations (future iterations might separate finding the correct ingredient vs. the correct order).
  • Other than unexpected behavior (but perhaps still working as designed), I did not encounter any glitches or issues. Game ran perfectly in the web browser.
  • Did give me old school gaming feels.
  • I feel like visually there are minor things which can be tweaked which would improve QoL/user experience, but considering this is a mouse-only game in a browser window, I think the visual indicators are obvious enough that you could figure everything out even without reading most of the directions/rules. That's a lot better than some of those old school games!
  • Would play more

In this prototype, the entire game can be played by mouse. You use the Compass in the top right corner to move the character, and the buttons below to either Arrest, Brew, or investigate. All information can be found within the Instructions pages and in the notebook on the left of the main menu :)
